On Thursday January 26, Christy Wyatt, Corporate Vice President and General Manager at Motorola Mobile Devices and parent of Sophomore Taylor Mahal, came to the Upper School to speak to the students about her career experiences.

WP – Seniors awarded Elks scholarships

During winter break, seniors Gene Wong and William Chang were awarded $400 for being Santa Clara Lodge finalists in the Most Valuable Student Scholarship Contest sponsored by the Elks National Foundation.

WP – Plastic bags banned

On January 1, an ordinance passed by the city of San Jose a little over a year prior went into effect, making the city the largest in the state of California to ban plastic carryout bags.

WP – Nichols fiber optics cables damaged

The damaged fiber optics connection in Nichols has recently been replaced. The issue was likely caused by mice chewing the cables.
The problem affected some teachers’ phones, but for the most part these issues did not affect students, as the school’s Internet traffic is wireless and does not go through the fiber optics cables.

WP – New laws passed

On October 10, 2011, Governor Jerry Brown has signed several new laws into effect starting from 2012.

Dr. Saad Shakir speaks at Cum Laude and Medical Club joint event

During long lunch on Wednesday, January 18, psychiatrist Dr. Saad Shakir, M.D., gave a presentation titled “Becoming a Doctor” to students in Nichols Hall, an event co-sponsored by the school’s Chapter of the Cum Laude Society and the Medical Club.

Upper School students travel to San Ramon for DECA competitive business conference

On Friday, January 13th, 65 upper school students travelled with their advisers Samuel Lepler and Mary Mortlock to the San Ramon Marriott to attend the DECA Northern California conference.
